Canal contract awarded

The FCC-ICA-Meco consortium yesterday received the contract for the fourth and final phase of dry excavation for the expansion of the Panama Canal.

The consortium now has 10 business days to deliver performance bonds to the Panama Canal Authority insuring the work. After receiving this documentation, the authority will deliver the order to proceed on the work.

The project is expected to take three-and-a-half years. The project is located on the west bank of the Canal between Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks. It will involve the excavation, removal and disposal of approximately 26 million cubic meters of material.

The consortium submitted a bid of $267.7 million, the lowest of the four bids.
